Embrace Stories, stories from the Cloud: Arnold

Arnold's story at Embrace

Every month, we put one of our employees in the spotlight to find out who the people in our Human Cloud are. We are briefly talking about privacy, work and Embrace. This month, we're highlighting the story of Arnold, front-end developer at Embrace. In the office, he can be recognized by his “health” that you hear in the distance when you sneeze.

Rock, travel and routine

To get straight to the point, Arnold is a man with broad interests. He plays the guitar (until recently in a band), enjoys reading and spends time with his wife and three children. Music plays a major role in his life, especially alternative rock, 90s grunge and psychedelic rock.

When we ask him about his “bucket list”, we surprise him. There is no bucket list, but the road trip he is about to take is one to list. Together with his wife, he travels to the USA to drive Route 66. That is therefore a common thread in his vacations, rather active than sitting still.

He also has his regular habits at the office. An early start to be most productive, a late lunch to postpone the afternoon dip, and end with the feeling of having really achieved something.

Puzzling for customization

Arnold works as a front-end developer and specializes in portal styling at Embrace and brings his fixed layouts to life every day. However, his work offers plenty of room for creativity, especially when customers want something different. At such moments, he dives into a puzzle: what is possible, what is not, and what maybe? That is exactly what Arnold likes about his work.

With his knowledge of CSS, the language that controls the layout of websites, he often knows how to come up with smart and effective solutions. It gives him a sense of satisfaction when he delivers a design exactly as the customer has in mind. He is currently studying the differences between the styling options of the new Portals Builder and the old version to ensure that customers always get the best experience.

From entrepreneur to colleague

After 15 years as a self-employed person, the application process at Embrace took some getting used to. He rolled in as a freelancer and thus had the time to see if he fit into the team. Fortunately, this was the case! Arnold was offered a job. Arnold says that he likes the fact that so many different people, of all ages and backgrounds, work there. As a result, everyone accepts each other as they are.

An important lesson he learned here? Set limits. “In the past, I often said 'yes' to customers too quickly, only to find out later that something wasn't possible after all. Now I try to say 'no' first, and if it does work, it's a nice surprise. That is much more valuable to customers.”

More than just a workplace

For Arnold, working at Embrace isn't just about technology, it's also about people. Embrace is a great place where he can work well with colleagues and where he is constantly learning new things.

Every day brings new challenges and new puzzles to solve. And that is exactly why Arnold feels so at home here.
